Chapter Sixteen

Ceit headed up the staircase to her chamber. She didn’t wish to speak to anyone at this point.

Least of all Brin.

The look on his face when someone suggested marriage made every feeling she’d had for him disintegrate into a swirl of dark snow flurries. She hated this entire situation.

Hated what they’d done. Hated the snow, the avalanche, everyone at this point.

Even Brin. She wished to go home.

She closed the door behind her and threw herself onto her bed, willing the tears to stay away for a wee bit more. How she wished she were home in her own bedchamber on Ramsay land. With people she could discuss freely and ask questions, especially due to this uncommon situation. If she were to guess, she’d be discussing this soon. Someone would follow her so she’d have to save her tears for later.

Aunt Brigid’s quiet knock interrupted her thoughts. “May I come in, Ceit?”

She sighed and said, “Enter.”

Aunt Brigid came in and sat on the end of the bed. “May we chat?”

“Aye, but I have little to say.” She wasn’t going to tell anyone what truly happened between them. She was too embarrassed, and the entire night had naught to do with her maidenhead.

“May I speak? And if I do so, will you listen?” Aunt Brigid asked. She smoothed the fine fabric of her dress. Her aunt was still a beautiful woman, her chestnut-colored hair in waves down her back with a few strands of gray. She was more careful about her appearance than their cousin, Jennet, but she had her own way to flaunt the usual conventions for women. She refused to plait her hair every day.

Jennet refused to wear gowns and dressed in leggings unless it was a special event. The two had numerous tales about the trouble they often found themselves in during their younger days, including the time King Alexander favored them because of Jennet’s clever way of saving Torrian from a forced marriage.

She scowled, recalling that even that story was about chicken blood and a lass’s maidenhead.

Ceit muttered, “I will listen, but it is revolting the way women are judged so quickly. I was on patrol, and if every time a lass goes on patrol and gets stuck with a man, the reaction is to force a wedding, you’ll have a hard time finding any man who will agree to go on patrol or even battle with a woman.”

Aunt Brigid tipped her head, thought for a moment, and said, “I agree with ye. I dinnae think ye will be forced to marry Brin. So please dinnae ask. But I’ll offer this as a reason while we are asking questions. If yer sire or grandsire were here, would they ask any questions?”

“I dinnae want either of them here.” She grabbed a pillow and covered her face. “Go ahead and I’ll listen.”

“I’m unsure whether or no’ ye have heard the tale of Torrian and Heather, but Heather doesn’t hesitate to tell the tale of how she was taken advantage of by a verra wealthy nobleman.
